opening\nthe latch of the back door with the turn of a shining brass knob<\/p>\n\n\n\n

polished\nby generations of hands<\/p>\n\n\n\n

walking\nout into the sun-drenched garden<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stretching\nway back to the hedge of pomegranate trees<\/p>\n\n\n\n

bordered\nby the sanded-in irrigation ditch<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\nancient gnarled plum tree<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\n rickety arbor of sweet crystal grapes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\never-flowering General Gallieni rose bush<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\nsmooth trunks of white guava trees <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\nstrangling purple bougainvillea<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nsaw in the Karoo-dust gliding in <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\nwarm light falling <\/p>\n\n\n\n

through\nhigh hatch windows<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a\nnew beginning<\/p>\n\n\n\n

simple\nliving<\/p>\n\n\n\n

friends\neating around a long yellowwood table <\/p>\n\n\n\n

on\nthe cool back stoep<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the\nmemories of ancestors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of\nstories told<\/p>\n\n\n\n
